About Us

Been wondering why we are called the Asses Ears Wilderness Lodge?

Well, we have Major Mitchell the explorer that named the Grampians and most of its mountain ranges to thank for our name.   Our property looks out towards the Mount Difficult Range to the East, The Black Range to the West and the most prominent of all, the Asses Ears Mountain Range to the South.  Why it is called the Asses Ears is beyond us, if you can point out the ears we'll give you a free beer and stubby holder.

Apparently Major Mitchell named it the Asses Ears after a mountain he surveyed on the Island of St Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean where Napolean was in exile between 1815-1821.  We personally think he had rocks in his head!
