Wildlife

The Wartook Valley is one of the best areas to view large mobs of kangaroos and emus, not to mention all the other 40 species of mammals living in the park.  The best spot to see wildlife is as you leave Zumstiens on the Mount Victory- Grampians Road heading towards Wartook and along Roses Gap Road.  The Black Range is also another excellent area in which you may see some rare and threatened Brolga, Royal Spoonbill, Wedge tail Eagles, and Pied Cormorants.

Without having to do any travelling at all, you will see plenty of kangaroos, and other wildlife and birdlife right here at the Asses Ears Wilderness Lodge.  Go for a wander around the property and nature trail during the day.  You are likely to see many types of birds including Cockatoos, Galahs, Gang Gangs, Fairy Wrens, Honey Eaters, Wattle Birds and plenty of Rosellas and Parrots.  If you're lucky you may see Wedge Tail Eagles and Black Cockatoos.  Kangaroos and wallabies are in abundance here, as are several types of lizards such as Goannas, Stumpy tails and Frill Necks (warmer months).

At night grab a spotlight or torch and check out the nocturnal animals.  Expect to see (and hear) various possums, gliders and owls.

Of course, if you would prefer, you can join one of our half or full day Asses Ears 4WD Tours and we'll make sure you have seen plenty of wildlife by the end of your tour.
